Super Goat to the rescue!
55 year old Regina Kilile is part of the Kakiani Dairy Goat Keepers Group in the Mutunguni Area Development Programme in Kenya. The group has 21 members who are widows, elderly, care takers of orphaned and vulnerable children or people living with HIV/AIDS. Regina herself is a widow who has seven children. The goats that our supporters in Ireland gave the group in 2008 are of the Toggenburg breed. The Toggenburg is substantially larger than local goats and besides being perfectly suited to the harsh weather and grazing conditions, it produces double the meat, milk and offspring of local goats making it…a Super Goat!
The group’s breeding programme is aimed to upgrade the local goats to the standard of the super goats and of course to produce more goats and milk for sale that will ultimately improve the standard of living for these people.
But what does all this mean for Regina?
“This project has been very resourceful for my family”, Regina explains. “The goats require tending only in the morning and evenings when they are fed and milked. This gives me enough time to work on my other duties and take care of my children.”The milk the goats produce in the morning and evening has greatly impacted on their family’s diet and any surplus is sold on the market. The income generated covers the cost of food for the goat as well as other items the family needs such as food or education. “I will be able to put my children through school using the proceeds I will get from selling the goat’s milk thanks to this generous donation from a kind friend in Ireland.”
