Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone’s 5.5 million citizens are still recovering from a civil war which ended in 2002. The effects of war can be seen in the many poverty indicators across the country such as insufficient food, poor housing, high infant and maternal mortality rates and high illiteracy.

World Vision Ireland has been working with the Imperi Area Development Programme since 1995. Many safe drinking water sources and sanitation facilities were ruined during the war. It is a priority to improve these facilities as well as to improve health and school attendance. In particular girls are faced with the chore of collecting water from often dirty sources miles away and therefore miss school. In a country with low literacy rates improving this situation and the overall education facilities is vital.
