Mauritania
Mauritania gained its independence from France in 1960 and is known as the home of the Moors. In the Middle Ages, the Moors spread Islam throughout most of Northwest Africa and conjured much of Spain. World Vision entered Mauritania in 1983 to distribute food aid during a time of severe drought and famine.
In 1998 the Guerrou regions showed the highest rate of malnutrition in the region and World Vision Ireland started to work with the community to improve food supplies. The community has come a long way since then but more needs to be done. Gift such as a sheep & lamb or a community shop provide access to food and everyday items as well as giving people the means to generate income.
Mbagne ADP is currently in the assessment phase where the community sets out plans and strategies of how to best achieve their goal of a self-sufficient, brighter future. World Vision Ireland gives advice and guidance; soon the community will be ready for child sponsorship and receiving community gifts!
